Facebook SHUTTING DOWN controversial face recognition program vows to delete over a BILLION templates

Citing “growing concerns” about privacy and ethics, Facebook has announced it will stop using face recognition technology and delete more than a billion individual templates harvested so far from users who opted into the program.

The decision comes as part of “a company-wide move to limit the use of facial recognition in our products,” Jerome Pesenti, Facebook’s VP of Artificial Intelligence, said on Tuesday.

When the feature is discontinued, sometime “in the coming weeks,” more than a billion Facebook users who have opted in will have their facial recognition templates deleted and they will not be automatically recognized, Pesenti explained.

Slave room discovered at Pompeii in rare find

Pompeii archaeologists said Saturday they have unearthed the remains of a "slave room" in an exceptionally rare find at a Roman villa destroyed by Mount Vesuvius' eruption nearly 2,000 years ago. The little room with three beds, a ceramic pot and a wooden chest was discovered during a dig at the Villa of Civita Giuliana, a suburban villa just a few hundred meters from the rest of the ancient city. An almost intact ornate Roman chariot was discovered here at the start of this year, and archaeologists said Saturday that the room likely housed slaves charged with maintaining and prepping the chariot. COP26 urges coal curbs faster climate action in third draft text

The mention on Saturday of fossil fuels was weaker than a previous draft, which called on countries to "accelerate the phasing out of coal and subsidies for fossil fuels". The new version, meanwhile, called for "accelerating efforts towards the phase-out of unabated coal power and inefficient fossil fuel subsidies." It also called for "recognising the need for support towards a just transition" - how developing nations still reliant on fossil fuels for power are assisted to decarbonise. The texts also called for nations to accelerate their emissions cutting plans and submit new ones by the end of 2022 - three years earlier than set out in the Paris Agreement.
